Red Bull Stratos Blog yazdı:Thank you to everyone who entered the Drop Zone competition to estimate where Felix Baumgartner would land following his freefall from the edge of space. His final landing position was 43.8 miles or 70.5km from the capsule’s original launch site at the following coordinates: Latitude: 33° 21’ 28.84” Longitude: -103° 47’ 5.38”
In the spirit of competition we hoped to stimulate the minds of those curious about weather patterns and aerodynamics, the same topics our science team had to consider when determining Felix’s trajectory and landing zone. Red Bull Stratos meteorologist Don Day was tasked with not only forecasting the weather for launch, but also projecting Felix’s landing - and he did it spot on. Don first used a radiosonde to examine the profile of the atmosphere, which was sent up by a small balloon seconds after Felix’s balloon lifted off. He also calculated the winds aloft, the temperature at various altitudes in proximity of Felix’s estimated float altitude, and plugged in Felix’s weight. Based on this trajectory, Don Day and the science team were able to radio to the chase helicopter where Felix would likely land. Felix was also equipped with GPS which acted as confirmation and fed back information to Mission Control.
The winner of this competition researched the previous two landing zones in relation to the ground and upper level winds. Just two hours before Mission launch the winner also checked the ground and upper level winds and compared these to previous results to predict a final landing zone. His prediction was just 303 meters away from Felix’s touch down point. Hard work paid off!
Red Bull Stratos is delighted to announce the winner who will receive a Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback watch and the five runner up prize winners who will each receive an official Mission backpack.
